Private Eye : Mrs Wilson's Diary

-----------------------------------

The concept of writing satire from the point of view of a Prime Ministerial spouse was to become a favourite with the Private Eye magazine. Mrs Wilson's Diary (a collaboration between Wells and Ingrams) purported to chronicle events during Harold Wilson's government. The format allowed the writers wide rein to comment on the personal peculiarities of senior politicians without seeming overly absurd, and was presented in a context that was, whilst clearly fictional, quite plausible. Exceptionally funny- for those of a certain age. Probably 75% of the UK's current population would have no idea who Harold Wilson was, let alone his poet wife, always ready with the Wincarnis and twiglets, and seemingly oblivious to Lady Forkbender, Mafia Joe and the rest of the Wilson's kitchen cabinet.
